Legend
Dr. Igor Križaj (1963) accomplished his doctoral studies at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana (JSI), the leading Slovenian scientific research institute, and at the Imperial College in London, UK. He received his PhD from the University of Ljubljana (UL), Slovenia. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute Pasteur in Paris. Since 2004, he is heading the Research Programme “Toxins and Biomembranes” and since 2007 also the Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences at JSI. He is a full Professor of Biochemistry at UL and at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School in Ljubljana. His major research topics are: (1) Toxinology (animal venoms, envenomation, neurotoxins, anticoagulants, procoagulants, antithrombotics, hemorrhagins, myotoxins, molecular mechanisms of action, toxin receptors, venomics, venoms to drugs); (2) Secreted phospholipases A2, their inhibitors and activators, physiological and pathological roles; and (3) Proteomics and protein structure: structure-function relationships. So far, he published 170 papers in SCI ranked journals (refer to PubMed and Cobiss) and 5 chapters in scientific monographs. He has led 30 research projects, national, international or industrial. He supervised 57 students on different levels of the study, among these 13 doctoral students. He is a member of several professional societies, in some he served as an officer. His most prestigious functions were the Secretary of the European Section of the International Society on Toxinology (IST) and the Member of the IST Council from 2004 to 2012. He is an editorial board member at several international scientific journals, including Toxicon. For his scientific achievements, he received Jožef Stefan Golden Emblem Prize, Zois Distinction, Lapanje Award and Zois Award.
