Povzetek
The vulnerability of adult beech is to be clarified at Central-European forest conditions to chronic O3 impact. O3 as acting in 'Global Change' may constrain the C sink strength under expected atmospheric CO2 enrichment. A novel 'Free-Air Canopy O3 Exposure' system, creating an enhanced O3 regime within the canopy ensures the analysis of O3-induced responses relevant for tree C balance. O3 flux into leaves will be validated against AOT40. Responses across cell, organ and whole-tree level will be assessed with molecular, biochemical and ecophysiological methods. Additional exposure of young beech within the canopy and branch curette fumigations will validate previous O3 studies. Evidence will be incorporated into mechanistic modelling that scales to the stand level and quantifies O3 impact for 'Global Change' scenarios. This process-based risk assessment will guide policy making.
