Abstract
The target of this project is the complete optimization of modern IPTV system, comprising: video signal receivers, encoders, headend multicast and edge unicast streaming servers, transmission infrastructure, modem and client devices, such as set-top box, PC, PDA or mobile phone. The optimization will cover the following system features: 1) video and audio codec depending on available bitrate; 2) spatial (resolution), quality (processing) and temporal (frame dropping) scalabilities; 3) video and audio preprocessing (smart blurring, denoising and temporal deflickering); 4) video and audio postprocessing (smart sharpening, deringing and temporal deflickering); 5) maximum (peak) and average signal bitrate; 6) signal latency; 7) transmission error resilience; 8) forward error correction UDP/IP vs. TCP/IP; 9) encryption and decryption; 10) server scalability and malfunction resilience; 11) quality of received signal (quality of experience) based on feedback information; 12) adding, upgrading and updating of new applications (walled garden, web and embedded); 13) access to Internet web sites; 14) IPTV system cost; 15) set-top box power consumption (usage of client presence sensor, efficiency of power supply and decoder); 16) server power consumption (server virtualization, efficiency of UPS and power supply); etc. The actuality of this research is highest possible, due to combined world-wide trends in IPTV deployment and green-technology initiatives.
