Abstract
This is a research program proposed to improve the Aluminium-Magnesium alloy (Al-Mg) based sheet and plate properties suitable for applications in road and rail transportation means (trucks, road tankers, rail coaches or freight cars). Due to the increasing demands for lowering the weight of transportation means in order to increase the payload and improve the fuel efficiency, the application of Al – alloys becomes very attractive, offering the potential to lower the weight of structures made of low-carbon steel. The non-heat-treatable Al-Mg alloys were appointed as favorable in respect of cost as well as the required properties for successful service. The aim of this project is to define: (i) the selected Al-Mg type alloy property - structure – processing relations needed for manufacturing a base material with properties suitable for the road and rail transportation application, (ii) the appropriate welding procedures, (iii) enabling the producers to introduce a new approach in truck (different types) train design.
