Abstract
In the circumstances of globalisation and the increased mismatch between transport supply and demand, "damage" to the social community occurs. Such damage includes environmental impact through global warming and pollutant emission, increased traffic congestion, etc. that are contrary to the objectives set out for sustainable development. The research will address the mutual dependence and significance of the indicators in the transport system. By establishing the mutual dependences it is possible to create the procedures in transport planning and management, in the situations adversely affecting energy efficiency and traffic congestion. The research is based on the relevant development strategies in Serbia and international documents. The objectives of this research are: to enable assessment of global impacts on transport sustainability and traffic system efficiency, to provide the basis for traffic infrastructure planning with reduction of pollution by use of traffic management measures and ITS, to provide decision making instruments, to provide the basis for environmental optimization of traffic. The results are the defined indicators in transport planning and management; indicator research methodologies; transport planning procedures; possible ITS-based transport management strategies; definition of the databases required for preparation of urban transport models and provision of the basis for standardization of procedures and methodologies applicable in Serbia.
