Abstract
In this project modern sensor and wireless communication technologies will be investigated and applied to improve road safety. Driving in low-visibility conditions (e.g., fog or heavy precipitation) and during night is particularly challenging leading to increased probability of traffic accidents and possible injuries. During this project we will develop a system for intelligent marking of the road edge in low-visibility and night-time. The system could eventually replace the existing signalization that is based on passive reflectors. We believe that application of this system would dramatically improve the traffic road safety. It consists of an array of autonomous nodes that are installed on both sides of the road. Each node can detect a passing vehicle, correspondingly turn on the light signalization and generate a wireless message intended to neighboring nodes. Upon detecting a passing vehicle, a node may turn its light signalization on (red on the right side or white on the left side of the road). The results of this project will be presented at national and international conferences and published in journals. During the project, we plan to develop contacts with domestic and international commercial entities towards future commercialization of the system. The project will contribute towards modernization of traffic signalization and development of intelligent infrastructure leading to significantly improved road safety.
