Abstract
Comprehensiveness of research is based on the analysis of the existing housing stock at several spatial levels, from the angle of related scientific discourses: architectural, urban, technological and historical ones. Research actuality is the fact that traditionally adopted concept of the housing unit and morphological characteristics of the housing system of the existing housing stock in Serbia no longer meet the needs of contemporary beneficiaries. The research is focused on determination of cause-and-effect connections between functional-spatial structure of residential buildings, technological, historical and social changes, as well as housing culture, having in mind that such research is disciplinary and strategically oriented towards the planning and design practice. Accordingly, in conditions of the environment with undefined parameters of dwelling comfort and standards which are not adjusted to contemporary life, European standards and market needs, lack of variety in offer of forms of housing, there is an obvious need for new development, morphological and typological forms of housing system and individual housing units. For the purpose of directly applying the research results in planning and design practice, the focus is placed on exploring the possibilities for concept operationalization through a set of applicable standards and parameters which are relevant for strategic planning and design of residential buildings.
