Abstract
Building information modeling – BIM is a process of creating electronic building model that describes whole building lifecycle. BIM process is under development for more than 20 years and some countries have issued its obligatory use. Project conducted to provide initial information on conformability of AEC industry in Serbia with BIM process revealed that it is not possible to achieve BIM process on the fly and that survival on the future global AEC market depends on the timely development of relevant methodology. The project’s goal is the definition of the new method for the production of MEP design and construction documents. Method is independent from commercial BIM applications and presents general principles for implementation of BIM process and use of relevant standards – IFC, IFD and IDM. Method’s development consists of the thorough study of the standards’ relevance for the production of MEP design and construction documents, based on concrete examples. The investigation will provide verification of standards’ compliance with real user needs. New method will enable user to use technology to elevate its business process without modifying it to the technology requirements. Method includes instructions how to apply IFC, IFD and IDM standards for the production of MEP design and construction documents, how to evaluate agreement of commercial BIM applications with requirements of this method, and description of techniques to overcome the shortcomings.
