Abstract
Development of new cultivars and hybrids for different methods of growing and different uses is of particular importance for increasing the quality and yield of vegetables. The process of development of new genotypes (lines, varieties, hybrids) of vegetables will include genetic research, screening (phenotypic and molecular evaluation) of the existing and newly developed material for yield, quality, stability and tolerance, along with a selection of material and breeding methods, which will depend on the vegetable crop in question. Designing a cultivar-specific technologies for different production methods. These studies will include nutrition, cost-efficient water scheduling and the monitoring of parameters of photosynthetic activity under different production conditions. Identification and determination of distribution of dominant pathogens (viruses, bacteria) and pathogenicity and virulence tests should indicate the importance of individual pathogens in the overall reduction of vegetable yields.Simultaneously with these tests, the existing genotypes shall be screened for applicability in further breeding work. A new technology of weed control will be tested for applicability in different vegetable production systems (organic, integrated production), all aimed at the production of safe food. Market research and assessment of possibilities to increase the turnover of vegetables on the domestic and foreign markets and to promote the international trade of vegetables.
