Abstract
It has already been established that the aerobic level of a water-bearing medium affects the nature of groundwater. quality transformation. However, this characteristic has not been studied in sufficient detail and has not been directly associated with groundwater sources or groundwater abstraction.Past research and investigations focused on individual problems, primarily the transport and transformation of a substance depending on the presence or absence of O2, clogging, corrosion, or biofouling of water abstraction facilities, the growth and effect of bacteria on the occurrence and rate of these processes, and the like.A correlation has been established between the aerobic level of an aquifer and the quality of a groundwater source.Favorable hydrogeological conditions, accompanied by a high aerobic level, generally guarantee a high self-purification potential of the medium and, in turn, require a relatively low level of raw water treatment, provide superior groundwater protection conditions, and ensure high water supply security. As part of this Project, a methodology will be developed to comprehensively address various aspects of groundwater source capacity and groundwater quality, based on a set of characteristics which are encompassed by the term „aerobic level“ of the groundwater and the aquifer. The proposed methodology and standards will be verified through parallel investigations conducted at selected existing and potentially significant gw. source locations.
