Abstract
Earth observation, based on the application of modern technologies such as information and communication (ICT) and nuclear technology (NT), presents the basis for understanding of the Earth system and a prerequisite for advances in the fields essential to society: environmental and health protection, ecology, agriculture, forestry. This project continues the interdisciplinary researches started at the BioSense Centre, Univ. of N.Sad, already supported through several FP7 projects, and it extends this research to the whole Serbian territory through the establishment of highly-instrumented observational sites (HIOS) for both natural (terrestrial, aquatic) and artificial (agricultural, urban) ecosystems monitoring. Besides advances in individual scientific fields (ICT, NT, ecology, forestry, agriculture, public health, economy, law), the project relies on the interdisciplinary approach to establish GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) portal of Republic of Serbia and to include Serbia into international organization GEO (Group on Earth Observation), leading to novel insights into the behavior of different ecosystems. An interdisciplinary approach to research will result in the development of expert systems for decision-making and integrated ecosystem management, with the final goal to improve high-level decision making and contribute to harmonization of domestic and EU legislation in the fields of ecosystem management, agriculture and public health.
