Abstract
Subject of this research are the social and political changes that took place in Kosovo and Metohija and in relation to K&M in Serbia and the wider Western Balkan region. They will be examined with the recognition of the fact that in this region exist constant ethnic conflicts between Serbian, Albanian, Turkish identity and European identity on the other hand, also providing a conflict between traditional and modern. The starting point is that there is a need to preserve the Serbian national identity, which is now seriously threatened in K&M, with the simultaneous need for modernization of the entire society through the acceptance and compliance with our values with the European values. The research will be a retrospective from the perspective of history (from the early Middle Ages, through the Byzantine and Ottoman period ending with the period of existence of the Yugoslav state), but also from the perspective of contemporary social change, initiated at the end of the twentieth century and from the point of various social sciences (sociology, political science, law, demography, psychology, pedagogy), literature and language, with particular reviewing of how much the changes are in the function of acceptance of political and cultural system of European society. In this regard it is important to note that social changes in Kosovo and Metohija should not be viewed in isolation, but in relation to the changes of social and political system in Serbia and the Western Balkans.
