Abstract
Aim : Estimate of financial and workload of Republic of Serbia healthcare sector due to most prevalent and severe disorders requiring long term care and leading to substantial decrease of life quality, working ability and life span. Assess cost/effectiveness/utility of commonly prescribed diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. Methods of choice shall be cohort, case control, cross-sectional and case series clinical studies. Observed entities include major depression, malignant neoplasms, addiction disorders, community acquired pneumonia, dementia, renal insufficiency syndrome and pathology of fertility. Clinical outcomes and costs of interventions shall be followed simultaneously among competing diagnostic procedures, drugs or surgical treatments. Expected outcomes: Proposed research should exhibit substantial discrepancy between healthcare budget resources allocation and „real world” population needs. We shall measure true financial burden of observed disorders and recommend most cost/effective procedures available. We also hope that these results will lay ground for wiser budget planning in future much more in line with societal demand which shall spend money on procedures where proven benefit justifies investment. Comparing findings in this middle with some high income EU economies would probably provide basis for healthcare standards harmonization during EU enlargement process at Western Balkans region, especially with regards to financing.
