Abstract
Relying on the definition of a biological marker, i.e. a biomarker, as a “characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of a normal biological process, pathogenic processes, or pharmacological response to a therapeutic intervention”, the planned investigation will include the evaluation of biomarkers as possible diagnostic, prognostic and predictive indicators of primarily cardiovascular and malignant diseases Such an investigation is prerequisite for improving current and future clinical management of these complex diseases as well as patient care. In order to enhance clinical and therapeutic interventions in patient treatment, the investigation should necessarily include preanalytical considerations, analytical and clinical validation, and the clinical usefulness of disease biomarkers. It is essential to evaluate the sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and precision of the new biomarkers, to enable their application in patient treatment, more effective health care and outcome evaluation in diseases for which they are recommended. Conducting the above described complex investigation will result in the formation of diagnostic protocols according to the principles of evidence-based laboratory medicine. Project investigations will be done at the Center for Medical Biochemistry of the Clinical Center of Serbia, whose laboratories have been accredited in accordance with the demands and standards ISO 17025 and ISO 15189.
