Abstract
The objectives of our research are evaluation of endocrine regulatory mechanisms, markers of inflammation and cardiovascular risk factors in metabolic disorders. During this research project we plan to determine levels of ACTH, cortisol, ghrelin, GH, IGF-I, insulin, estradiol, testosteron, SHBG, progesterone, adipokines (leptin, visfatin, resistin, and adiponectin) and, systemic markers of inflammation (hsCRP, interelukin-6, 17, 18, 21 and 23, TNF-alpha), to evaluate integrity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and to measure insulin sensitivity, quantity of fat tissue, and intimo-medial thickness of carotid arteries in patients with u metabolic syndrome, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenal incidentalomas, in premenopausal and menopausal women and in andropausal men. All of these tests should be performed before and after therapeutic procedures (insulin sensitizers, hormone replacement therapy, bariatric surgery, etc). The results of this research project should help us for better understanding of complex hormonal changes observed in metabolic disorders during development of atherosclerosis, recognition of early markers of atherosclerosis, and finally to evaluate the efficacy of therapetic procedures used for prevention and treatment of previously mentioned metabolic disorders.
