Abstract
In an experimental study, the effects of recorded traffic noise of 80 dB (A) Leq on arterial blood pressure will be studied in 200 normotensive adults, using the methods of oscillometry and plethysmography. Thoracic biolectrical impedance will be applied to follow-up the effects of noise on: heart rate, cardiac index, systolic index, end-diastolic index, ejection fraction, contractility, vascular resistance index, and baroreceptor activity. The moderating role of gender and subjective noise sensitivity will be analyzed in relation to noise effects. In an intervention study, oscillometry, plethysmography and thoracic biolectrical impedance will be used to assess the effects of weight reduction on blood pressure and other cardiovascular functions in 200 obese hypertensive adults. Arterial stiffness will be investigated with an oscillometric arteriograph device, measuring the augmentation index and pulse wave propagation velocity before and after a weight reduction diet. The moderating role of obesity type, gender, dietary salt intake, physical activity and smoking in the cardiovascular effects of weight reduction will be studied. The project results will be a scientific support for the explanation of the importance of two risk factors for arterial hypertension: noise and obesity. Pointing out the most important moderating factors related to the effects of noise and obesity on blood pressure will contribute to more effective prevention of arterial hypertension.
