Abstract
Work on the project consists of the analysis of the Roman city centres in Serbia. The great importance have the excavations of two imperial residences, in Gamzigrad (Romuliana) and in Šarkamen. They were built in the places where previously existed the settlements which at the end of the 3rd century were transformed into palaces intended for the emperors. During our work we will try to define the character of these primary settlements. The excavations in Mediana have showed that here the luxurious villa during the 4th century grew into a residential complex, on whose analysis it will be worked further. The processes of transformation of the urban centres went into other direction. The settlements next to the camps in the course of time grew into the centres with all the characteristics of the cities, which implies the multiethnic structure of the population, the objects of different character and the developed handicraft and commercial activity. This show the excavations of Sirmium and Singidunum over many years. These excavations should be continued. The work on the project implies a multidisciplinary approach. This includes the analysis of the architectural objects and also the treatment of all movable finds, which requires the participation of the scientists of different profiles. The archaeological works in the field will take place in accordance with the approved finances.
