Abstract
In this project, we plan to design important services with enhanced performance, which are to be offered by the Internet router in the ubiquitous communication network. Proposed project is a continuation of the previous project titled “System Integration of the Internet Router” that was also financed by the Serbian Ministry of Science and Technology. In the previous project, we designed the Internet router prototype with basic functionalities such as routing and switching. In the proposed project, we plan to complete the prototype toward a real product. In particular, we plan to implement the new services which are important for network operators such as: MPLS, multicast and VPN. Using the MPLS protocol, operators can direct packets on the Internet along the arbitrarily selected paths and utilize the network efficiently in this way. MPLS also releases routers from processing of long IP addresses, because the MPLS encapsulated packets are routed according to the shorter labels. Multicast service allows better network utilization by the multicast traffic, which is sent from one source to multiple destinations, e.g. IPTV. The VPN services allow users on multiple network locations to be connected using the secured tunnels. We also plan to develop protocols for the bandwidth reservations on the Internet, which is very important for multimedia such as IPTV, video streaming etc. Finally, we plan to optimize the existing design and to increase its capacity.
