Abstract
In Slovenia grow seventy-eight indigenous tree species but only a few of them are important as marketable timber producers. Seven tree species (Norway spruce, European beech, silver fir common and sessile oak, Austrian and Scotch pine) constitute as much as 90% of the growing stock (wood mass), while 71 species represent mere 10%. In the past, forest management had a policy of favouring only some species, which led to process of predomination of »commercially important«tree species. As minor tree species are considered the species which are presented in forest in small numbers and which were not favoured in past management. In close-to-nature and sustainable forestry we tend to achieve optimum functioning of forest ecosystem and at the same time to produce the wood of the best quality. Close-to-nature silviculture respects all species which constitute a natural plant community e.g. forest stand. Therefore close-to-nature forestry based on knowledge of growth and development characteristics of tree species which grow in the forest on a given site including minor tree species. In this project are investigated and analysed distribution, height and diameter growth and stand structure of tree species, which were in the past overlooked or neglected by silviculture and forest tending. In the project are taken the following tree species: wild service tree, service tree, rowan, white-beam tree, hop hornbeam manna ash, common yew, grey alder and Laburnum alpinum, Prunus padus. The main goal of the project is to get more knowledge about growth and yield characteristics of minor tree species and to give the instructions for such forest tending which will ensure growth and development of all tree species which constitute the natural plant community on the given site unit.
