Abstract
Different responses of organisms to incresed metal contents in food or the environment will be studied mainly at sublethal levels. The difference in the effects of essential (Zn, Cu) and nonessential metals (Pb, Cd) on growth, developement, motility, molting, food consumption, and tissue ultrastructure will be investigated. Metal assimilation and accumulatin will be determined by atomic absorption spectrometry and electron microscopy. The effects of metals on the gut microflora will be investigated with microbiological, biochemical, and molecular biological techniques. The results will enable us to determine the most sensitive response and to choose the convinient organism for metal toxicity testing. Our aim is to evaluate and suggest improvements in the environmetal standards that today are mainly based on the lethal response of one organism.
