Abstract
The goal of the proposed project is to develop an analytical measurement method based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for the determination of bitumen quality. The method measures the proton NMR absorption spectrum of bitumen as a function of temperature. The spectrum width depends strongly on the degree of softness of bitumen in the melting process so that a hot liquid bitumen shows about thousand times smaller width from that of a cold solid bitumen. The temperature dependence of the proton NMR linewidth is used for an accurate monitoring of the bitumen softening process on melting. The method is intended to be used routinely for an on-line determination of the asphalt quality.
