Abstract
"In 6 countries with low-voter turnout in the 2019 elections to the European Parliament (EP), Parliament for the Future of Europe (PaFutEU) mobilises inactive citizens and vulnerable groups for the 2024 elections. The experience empowers citizens to use their democratic rights in the elections and boosters their long-term use of European civic rights. The project creates awareness for barriers/ inaccessibilities and develops concrete proposals for a more inclusive EU. In 12 events, PaFutEU connects the Conference on the Future of Europe with the European Parliament elections 2024. The events take place in 6 member states: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Portugal and Slovenia. What unites these countries is a low voter turnout in the 2019-EP elections with a maximum of 37.6 percent. In six 1-day Citizens‘ Panels, previously inactive citizens and vulnerable groups adapt the recommendations from the Conference on the Future of Europe to their specific needs. In the run-up to the elections in March and April, the event series ‘Get to know your candidate, get to know your constituents’ takes place. In the events, citizens exchange views with 4+ candidates for the EP in their own language."
