Abstract
In this project, we will first develop theory and practice of reading for pleasure that takes into account different reading profiles, and then equip with this knowledge a selected group of librarians specializing in children's and young adult literature, who will then serve as reading motivators in elementary schools. As out-of-school personnel and using new approaches, the reading motivators will attempt to engage in reading as many 4th, 5th, and 6th grade children as possible. They will adapt the content and form of their work to the specific reading profiles of the participants, acknowledging students' comprehensive reading experience, and aim to promote reading by using an open and diverse array of reading materials, ranging from traditional print books to comics and digital texts, and encompassing a wide range of formats. Reading motivators will hold a series of workshops with students and provide school teachers and librarians with a presentation of their work; they will also offer individual consultations on how to apply best practices to the compulsory program. Based on evaluation analysis and reader typology, we will formulate reading promotion guidelines for teachers and librarians that take into account the modern reading landscape in all its diversity of practices and materials.
Significance for science
As conceived, the project makes a major contribution to the systemic establishment of promoting reading motivation in primary schools and beyond. The project is practically applicable, but in its theoretical part it develops methods of engaging in reading that intertwine the fields of psychology, sociology, pedagogy, literature and librarianship.
Significance for the country
In order to ensure a solid reading culture in the digital age, it is of high importance that Slovenia develops strategies of reading for pleasure pedagogy, along with the relevant terminology, methods and the good practices, and thus keeps up with the newest findings of this rapidly developing field.
