Abstract
Boomering is not a fact-checking or debunking initiative, but a set of educational tools: the StoryMaps, Talos, Pareidolia and a free online MOOC training course.
The tools are aimed at young people aged 12-19, their parents and youth workers working with this age group.
The tools allow young people to explore on their own or have a guided conversation with young people about digital issues, the internet and misinformation.
Significance for science
Boomering - A Toolkit for Media Education and Critical Thinking is important for the development of science because it explores the very topical area of confronting misleading news and false information. Although we have been exposed to this throughout history, the digitisation of everyday life only increases the frequency with which such news and information occurs. Individuals and groups at all ages, including young people, are exposed to them, and it is crucial that we develop tools and strategies to identify them. The tools developed in the project, based on scientific knowledge in the field of pedagogy and didactics, support parents, educators and youth workers in guided conversations and explorations of misleading news and false information with young people. The tools are also designed for individual exploration and learning. Their main objective is to promote critical and media literacy among young people, which are important dimensions of literacy in a contemporary society defined by globalisation, fragmentation, rapid change and various crises (health, environmental, etc.). It is imperative that, in addition to the traditional knowledge, skills and competences that young people acquire through the education system, we also promote critical and media literacy among young people, which is not only acquired through the formal school system, but also on a daily basis.
Significance for the country
The Boomering - Toolkit for Media Education and Critical Thinking project is important from the perspective of Slovenia's development because it has developed four pedagogical and didactic tools to promote critical and media literacy among young people, as well as those who work with them on a daily basis, parents, teachers and youth workers. The tools are designed for both guided learning and self-learning. All four tools are available on the project website in five languages, in addition to Slovenian, English, French, Italian and Spanish. Various international experts, both from NGOs and academia, have been involved in the development of the tools, providing further confirmation of the high quality of the content that young people, or parents, teachers and youth workers, can engage with through the tools. The tools can be used in a wide range of subject areas in the educational context, and the multilingualism of the tools also offers potential in the field of foreign language learning.
