Abstract
The FEATURE project – Future feeds for sustainability in European livestock production – led by the University of Reading, is developing solutions for a more sustainable, resilient, and competitive European livestock sector. It focuses on finding and testing alternative feed sources that can reduce the environmental footprint, replace dependence on imported proteins, and at the same time maintain or improve productivity and animal welfare. Research includes testing mixed grasslands with herbs and legumes, using by-products from the agri-food industry, and developing new protein sources. In addition to its impact on animal digestibility and health, the project also assesses the effects on the sensory and nutritional quality of meat, milk, and eggs. FEATURE combines laboratory research, breeding trials, and life cycle analyses, actively collaborating with feed producers and breeders to ensure feasible and industry-relevant solutions. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the links between feed, gut microbiota, metabolism, and the sustainability of the entire supply chain. As part of the project, thirteen doctoral candidates will receive interdisciplinary training in sustainable livestock farming and the circular economy. Among the partners from across Europe is the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, which is leading the work package on food quality. The project is funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe program (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions).
