Abstract
Research program »Defense Studies« embraces research on human existence and activity in society/state and in natural environment from the viewpoint of survival and quality of life. From the historical perspective security is condition that provides for balanced physical, mental, psychical and material existence of individuals and community in relations with other individuals, community and nature. Human endeavour for security is civilisational and cultural category which in modern societies comprehends economical, social, cultural, political, legal, environmental and defense aspects. In other words it relates to basic social values. According to social organization security refers to local, regional, national, international and global dimensions. Defense Studies research program is basically oriented on study of security as an indivisible element of individuals, society/state and international system. Research work is focused primarily on following topics: ? perception and evaluation of security threats in contemporary society/state and international system; ? concepts of individual, national and international security; ? existing models and development of security policy on the national and international levels; ? individual and group values and attitudes referred to security and defense issues as a part of global culture in modern society; ? processes and developments in modern society connected to security issues, e.g.: security policy, military-defense policy, militarism, military industrial complex, civil-military relations, armament and disarmament, conflicts and conflict resolution, security dimensions of international relations, defense restructuring and conversion, personal policy and mobilization of armed forces, military management; ? problems of demobilization and conversion after armed conflicts. Defense Studies research program is inter-disciplinary program which includes elements of social, political and military sciences. According to its academic subject program is similar to the following programs abroad (developed mainly in Western countries): Security Studies, International Security Studies, Defense Studies, Strategic Studies, War Studies, Peace Studies.
