Abstract
The overall objective of the proposed study is to analyze and quantify the impact of elemental mercury (HgO) exposure on human health in occupational and ambient exposure in Idrija. The principal objective is to test hypothesis whether the accomulated level of Hg0 in previous and present occupational and ambient exposure (a) promotes lipid peroxidation, which could increase the risk of ishaemic heart disease, (b) influence on central nervous system and kidney and (c) the functional capacity of pineal, pituitary, thyroid and testes glands as a result of higher accumulation of Hg0 in these glands. The study will significantly improve the health surveillance of exposed population to Hg0 through impruved evaluation of specificity of selected bomarkers of early biological effects and initial impairment of functional capacity of target organs and tissues.
