Abstract
Selection and uneven-aged forests are, in ecological and economical sense, an important forest type in Slovenia. As a part of the project a network of reference objects for selection forests will be established. Reference plots will be located in different forest regions and site conditions. The outcome of detailed analyses of site conditions and stand structure in these objects, and precise controlling of their development and forestry measures, will serve as a basis for implementation in all other comparable uneven-aged forests in Slovenia. The area of a reference object will encompass a few hectares of forest; in each object, plant species composition will be evidenced, vertical and diameter stand structure analysed, some attributive signs of trees assessed; on smaller sample plots inside the reference objects, tree species regeneration will be analysed. For every chosen reference object past development and management of these forests will be analysed, taking into account attainable documentation. In the research of uneven-aged forest structure in the Dinaric phytogeographic region the attention will be focused on the supposedly autochthonous spruce, unique due to its special ecological, technical and management properties. On the level of Slovenia as a whole, basing on the actual data base of the Slovenian forests maintained by the Slovenian Forest Service, the dissemination of uneven-aged forests in Slovenia and their current condition will be analysed.Based on former forest plans and other documentation, a precise study will be made in selected forest areas to assess the development of selection forests in the past two centuries and the influence of the most important foresters in Slovenia (Hufnagl, Schollmeyer) on the development of the forests and forestry. The research results will accompanied the scheme of assessment of the sustainability in the uneven-aged forests, and will contribute to more suitable management of the selection forests.
