Abstract
One of the characteristics of the South Eastern European States is their ethnic, religious, cultural etc. heterogeneousness. The latter was one of the catalysts of interethnic conflicts, which in the territory of former Yugoslavia have escalated into destructive wars. Religious communities in the states of South Eastern Europe (SEE) have a very important role, since they are one of the key elements of the relationships in those societies. The basic notion of the research project is that religious communities could play, due to their specific position in the social structure of the countries concerned, a decisive role in the process of improving reconciliation, democracy, human rights and the protection of ethnic and religious minorities in the region. Precondition for this is the legal status of religious communities enables them to play such a role.In accordance with the above mentioned the project's main objectives will be the following:- to analyse the constitutional and legal regulation of religious communities in the states of the concerned region. This analysis will include an analysis of international legal obligations relating to the freedom of religion and belief, which bind particular states of the SEE as well as internal legislation of SEE states relating to religious communities;- to analyse institutional regulation of the status of religious communities. This analysis will be devoted to the study of state bodies or organs, competent for religious communities, e.g. governmental offices for religious questions or parliamentary bodies in this field etc.
