Abstract
The basic objective of the project is to study, in the widest sense of the word, the ethnic complexity and interethnic relations in Slovene Istra. A special attention within this framework will be dedicated to the ethnic awareness and its connectedness with linguistic communicational capability in the first and second languages (Slovene and Italian), as well as to the location of the attitude towards one's own (and common) ethnic identity in the members of ethnically mixed families, where we shall also follow the accompanying phenomena of "mixed conjugality", such as split loyalties and the excluding identifications of descendants of the ethnically mixed parents. Within the framework of the study of ethnically mixed marriages or families, the attitude of different ethnic groups towards marital heterogamy of their members will be also ascertained, as well as the degree of the interethnic distance. The aim of the project is therefore to define the complex nature of ethnic identity of the people living in the dealt with area and of the multi-cultural identity of Slovene Istra, to locate the degrees of intergroup distance, the individual and group ethnic identification and differentiation, as well as to analyse the nature and structure of interethnic relations. And last but not least, the aspects of associating of the dealt with territory with the cross-border neighbours and central Slovenia are also showing themselves as highly interesting for a research work, the same as this territory becoming a part of the globalisation processes and the processes of integration in united Europe. The project proposes an empirical research (studies of the case of Slovene Istra), where a combined methodological approach will be applied, i.e. the instrument of a questionnaire (quantitative approach), and the instrument of thorough auto/biographic partially-structured interviews (qualitative approach).
