Abstract
The research project will, on the one hand, cover the spheres that have fallen behind in the scientific analyses carried out so far or have not been dealt with in the historiography covering the territory of western Slovenia. On the other hand, it will combine the analyses our institute has carried out with the analyses of political, social and economic factors in the light of some newer European investigations. An important role in the making of these events were played by national issues, as well as by the protracted peripheral character of this area in relation to the centres of national entities to which it belonged (Habsburg monarchy and Venetian Republic) and therefore also to the greater centres of scientific and research work (Venice, Vienna, etc.); and, in the end, by the crossborder position of the area and the fact that it was torn between two different national allegiances and several administrative authorities. As far as its contents are concerned, the project is to be separated in several research blocks, which will focus on the analyses of those topics where the "gaps" in the research into western Slovenia carried out so far are most obvious. New approaches in historical research should therefore be established in the following spheres: - legal history, - history of migrations, - demographic history, - political history, - economic history, - history of the everyday life, - special attention will be given to the collection of oral history as far as modern history is concerned, where no great delays can be afforded. The project is based on the following backgrounds: - comparison or analysis of divergence in the historical development between the territory of western Slovenia and continental Slovenia, - emplacement of the research into internationally comparable frameworks, - bridging the gap in the so far carried out research in some spheres, - consideration of some prolonged processes regarding the issues of migrations, structure of inhabitants and some constants of political history as well as structure and dynamics of economy in the Primorska region from the New Age to the modern times, - analysis of the Primorska region as a constituent part of the Mediterranean complex of legal, economic and political history, and history of the everyday life. One of the analysis' principles is to systematically compare individual investigations by scientists at various institutions on both sides of the border, in order to achieve a consensus in some key issues of historiography.
