Abstract
If establishing intercultural dialogue is supposed essentially to contribute to shaping the future of European society and the associated political decisions, then we must open this discussion above all within these elementary frameworks, which have historically enabled it, which have become problematic precisely as historical possibilities. Europe cannot therefore simply be reconciled to the process of globalisation of the world, but must find answers to it, above all concerning the responsibility to humanity, by which we bind our understanding of "culture". This also perhaps captures the key idea of discussion in culture, as well as discussion between cultures today.
The central importance within this framework belongs to organizing of international conference: Europe, world and humaneness in the 21st century: Dialogue of cultures - Culture in dialogue during the time of Slovenian presidency of the European Community and in the year of intercultural dialogue (sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia). The Institute has also successfully stand as candidate for a post "European Union support in favour of Culture Presidency projects (Strand 1.3, special actions) Organisation and implementation of Cultural project(s) under the Slovenian presidency".
Significance for science
Humanistics in Slovenia is already incorporated into a wider research system network, which proved the ground for the development of the knowledge society. We are dealing with a different paradigm of knowledge here, which is simultaneously conceptualizing. In this we can become aware of the main scientific endeavor of humanistic today, which does not that much stand on the natural sciences side, but in interpretative relation to the whole complex of informational production of knowledge, in regard of what concerns and strives us as »sense«, which for itself needs »articulation«. Scientific significance of the proposed research programme is primarily being indicated with: - direct linking of research on humanistic field with cultural, publishing and pedagogical activities; - acquaintance of interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaborations on the humanistic field, which has not been adequately recognized in Slovenia so far; - contents linking with humanistic institutions among international framework, what will enable quality rise and new research possibilities on the humanistic field; - proceedings on the main questions of humanity in historical and contemporary views, what is supposed to be a linking basis within the international research framework; especially it should emphasize proceedings on historical and cultural identities of our time, concerning Slovenian and European humanistic heritage and globalization processes of today; - enforcement of innovative methodological viewpoints on the single humanistic fields and in the scope of interdisciplinary humanistic researches; - preparing the critical editions of the main humanistic works (complete works of Primož Trubar, Slovenian Atlas of History, Historical chronicle of the 18th Century); preparation of such works requests collaborations of all humanistic sciences; - publishing of high quality humanistic works, translations and scientific journals on the humanistic field.
Significance for the country
The main purpose of the programme » Humanities and the Sense of Humanity from Historical and Contemporary Viewpoints« is to define the situation of humanistic knowledge in the scope of development and research perspectives in the knowledge society, considering the historical importance of humanistics. Researches on single humanistic fields must therefore in accordance be formed upon the historical and contemporary viewpoints and interwined between disciplinary and methodological accessions. What especially stands out, regarding the specificity of Slovenian area, are questions, linked to the role of the language in humanistics and the meaning of humanistics, art and culture at forming and developing of historical and social identities. These proceedings cannot be developed without the European context, in which Slovenian culture is historically and presently engraved. A particular humanistic challenge in Slovenia, to which a programme »Humanities and the Sense of Humanity from Historical and Contemporary Viewpoints«, is the reflection on European intercultural horizont. On this basis it is also necessary to critically observe the social development in Slovenia just as to promote the humanistic consciousness in society, in particular what concerns the education, culture, science and media. Humanistic promotion is also promotion of Slovenia as an open society. In this context the activities of programme group, linked to the publishing of humanistic works, organizing of symposiums and exhibitions at home and abroad and to the development of e-archive, that should serve the purpose the promotion of humanistic literature, will be taking place.
