Abstract
Research project is part of the International Adult Literacy Survey in which around 20 other countries participate. International literacy survey has been co-ordinated by Educational Testing Service, Princeton and Statistics Canada. UNESCO and OECD are among international organisations supporting it. The Survey employs a common methodology which enables comparativity, validity and reliability of the research results and it is conducted in each country on a representative sample of population, from 15 to 65 years old. The research is the first national literacy survey in Slovenia. The aims of the Project: to find out what are the literacy levels of adult population and to compare the results with other countries, to analyse with which social, economic and demographic factors low literacy is linked with, to establish which groups of population has been marginalised because of low literacy levels and to find out the extend and characteristics of participation in adult education. For the planners of the fields dealing with the human capital and preventing the marginalisation of large groups of population, the national literacy profile means the tool for deciding on priorities among different levels (state, local and enterprise) and sectors (education, economy, social policy, employment). Comparative data will be published in the international report in the second part of 1998. And shortly after the national analysis of the literacy levels will be released. The results of the research will be also available via public data base.
