Abstract
The program focuses on material design based on the thermodynamics of materials, kinetics of various processes, phase transformations, microstructural development, methodology of synthesis and the characterization, synthesis and selection of materials. The goal of the program is to gain expertise and develop the theoretical basis along with the methodology of design, synthesis and processing and, finally, applying this knowledge as an engineering solution.
The majority of research work will focus on the constitution of metal alloys and composites, phase analysis, the construction of phase diagrams, the compatibility of composite constituents, internal oxidation of multi-phase alloys and composites, the synthesis of engineering alloys, low-melting point alloys, rapidly solidified shape memory alloys, chemo-thermal surface processing of metal and the micromechanics of multi-phase materials.
Significance for science
In a wider sense the contribution to a binary and ternary phase diagrams development, phase analysis and internal oxidation are important and respected also abroad. These achievements lead to an international cooperation in a field of internal oxidized materials, shape memory materials synthesis, and designing environmentally-friendly materials and products. Members of the research program were already successful, especially in years 2009 - 2013, in different research fields, such as: Constitution of metal alloys and composites. Development of reactive Al-Au nano-multilayered foils. Rapid solidification and shape memory alloys. Internal oxidation of copper and silver alloys with carbon. Development of metalographic examinatiom methodology. Failure analysis of mechanical parts and eqiupments. Investigations of superplastic properties and behaviour of Al alloys. Researchs in the field of micromechanics of heterogeneous alloys and composites. The development of new steel grades; development of new generation of armored steel PROTAC. Explosive welding of metalls. Numerical modeling of processes. Designing of environmentally-friendly materials, products, processes and technologies. The members of the research program have constant contact with faculties, departments, research groups and other institutions within our country and abroad. We cooperate in planning and realization of researches, mostly in synthesis of materials also with other groups and laboratories.
Significance for the country
The research program ''Synthesis and characterization of materials'' is taking care of achieving new knowledge in one of the basic fields of engineering that is tightly connected with the natural science. The field of our group activity is also interested for some other programme groups that we collaborate with in specific areas. Results have influence in continual social and economical development within the pedagogical process on all levels of study, continuous presence in industry and cooperation with other institutions. Theoretical and experimental work of the group is tightly connected with engineering of materials. Successful and industrial applicable cooperation enabled the group to achieve a part of research equipment and its further exploitations for economy. We were successful in synthesis and treatment of aluminum and iron alloys (modification and microstructural development control), production of low-fusible and ecologically accepted alloys. We developed several auxiliary sources for casting industry, set the fundamentals and application for thermo mechanical treatment of aluminum alloys, made applicable the chemical and thermal treatment of cold formed steel products exposed to high thermal and mechanical loadings. We were successful in the fields of rapid solidification processes, shape memory alloys, and internal oxidation of silver and copper alloys with carbon. With the direct cooperation with the industry we contribute to the technological and economical progress, and to the introduction of new materials, technologies and processes. The development of a new genration armored steel PROTAC 500 is a successful project where members of the research program participated in the development of a new product. With research and pedagogical work the group managed to connect following production technologies: process metallurgy, casting, forming, welding, powder metallurgy, heat treatment, surface engineering, nanotechnologies, design and development of environmentally-friendly materials, products, processes and technologies.
