Abstract
The research program is comprised of analysis, research and development of the following microsystems: 1. Microsystems with integrated polysilicone membrane for smart sensors of microdisplacements and pressure. 2. Microsystems with an integrated field of photodiodes for absolute in relative measurements of position in the nanometer range 3. Microsystems with an integrated field of magnetic sensors for precision measurements of magnetic fields and displacements and flows via the magnetic field. 4. The promising new field of integrated electrochemical microsensors is included in the program. All of the above microsystems include extensive analog and digital processing of sensor signals, at these are in principle inaccurate and their deficiencies have to be compensated by additional processing; first by analog methods and finally by digital signal processing. To make microsystems attractive for the users, all the required system functions, as defined by the users, have to be included. In Slovenia our largest users are RLS Merilna tehnika and Iskra TELA, and in Europe Renishaw of GB and Sensordynamics of Austria. In addition to research and theoretical goals, concrete realizations of all types of microsystems for known users are planned. Excellence in theoretical achievements is aimed at, as well as practical solutions for our users, that will improve their competitive position on the market.
Significance for science
Researchers of the program group have obtained 9 international patents, 9 domestic patents and filed 11 patent applications. They are co-authors of 23 scientific articles with impact factor. The highest scientific results are clearly in the area of complex sensors in detection of the different vapor traces in the air. An extremely small concentration of molecules of hazardous substances can be detected only with innovative sensor design, innovative sensor functionalization technology and advanced signal processing. In all these activities the LMFE researchers are at the peak of this research and they contribute original scientific solutions which are also published, but with a bit of restrain, not to lose their leading role against the other researchers. Even more high-profile scientific results of are reached in THz wave research, particularly in the area of improving the sensitivity and noise performance of THz sensors. The LMFE group developed the top-of-the-art antenna coupled bolometer sensor operating at room temperature and with a sensitivity in the range of 1000V/W and equivalent noise power 5pW / ? Hz and the response time less than 1µs. Slovenia was ranked among the other countries as one of the top high-tech countries in the THz research and development and was invited to a series of international meetings and conferences devoted to the upcoming new technology as it can and it will replace many X-ray systems. A patent for THz sensor fabrication was filled in England by the LMFE group and also many lectures and presentations about the development in THz area were given on international conferences, which has a direct impact on the science advance in the THz field.
Significance for the country
Since its beginning, LMFE has been strongly bonded to the Slovenian electrical industry. The laboratory has been of key importance for several large and important Slovenian factories. One of the fastest growing Slovenian electronics companies is RLS Merilna tehnika. LMFE has contributed to this company providing its research and scientific basis. Many special integrated circuits were also designed or even produced by LMFE for this company. A range finder with a high added value was a major export product of Fotona for several decades. Most of the electronics with top-level integrated circuits was developed and produced in LMFE. Additionally, Iskraemeco was one of the first international exporters of electronic electricity meters. LMFE has collaborated in the design process of both meter versions and significantly influenced the success of the products. LMFE is successfully overcoming the gap between the Slovenian scientific-research sphere and both the Slovenian and international industry. A strong connection with RLS has allowed this company to strengthen its position among the eminent international metrology corporations. Here, a rapid transfer of a scientific innovation into a product which is industrially feasible is of key importance. Previous success of LMFE assures that the researchers of the Laboratory are able to foresee the potential for industrial applications besides their research work and are able to solve actual industrial engineering problems. We see a large potential in the research of vapor detection sensors. Joint effort of Slovenian industry and LMFE could result in a set-up of a new production, or a foreign investor could be attracted in the worst case. Another potential for Slovene economy is also in the development of THz technology, as our primacy in the field of THz sensors with the best known room-temperature performance should be put to advantage.
