Significance for science
Our research of systematics and evolution of the group Zygiellidae encompassed not only molecular phylogenetic approaches, but also taxonomic, genetic, functional, and ecological methodology. To achieve our scientific objectives we thus employed profoundly interdisciplinary approaches. Such integrative biological approach is novel anywhere, but particularly in Slovenian science. Our research was thus new to the global science and will play a role in the development of a truly integrative methodology in researching biodiversity.
Significance for the country
Slovenian biology has traditionally researched local biodiversity, whereas our studies are profoundly global, as they delve into integrative biology of an entire evolutionary entity, in the case of this research project an enigmatic spider family Zygiellidae. Given the discoveries made during the course of this project, described above, and their coverage in the international press, both scientific and popular, we dare to state that we have considerably contributed to the global distinction and excellence of Slovenian biology and consequently contributed to the development of integrative biological sciences in Slovenia.
