Significance for science
Results of the project group are a contribution to the development of science:
in the early diagnosis of sepsis in critically ill newborns in children surface antigens index iCD64 in neutrophils proved to be most reliable in children while LBP was best in newborns;
in the field of improving diagnosis of pneumonia in critically ill newborns and children the most important serum marker was iCD64 on neutrophils, while PCT and LBP were less reliable;
in the field of diagnosing sepsis in children with febrile neutropenia and cancer, LBP, PCT and CRP had similar, intermediate accuracy, Il-6 was the earliest;
in PPROM of premature infants high concentration of defensins, but not IL-6 in the vaginal fluid was correlated to fetal/neonatal inflammation and neurological derangement at one year of age;
In PPROm of premature infants LBP in the umbilical cord blood and on the first day of life was correlated to fetal/neonatal inflammation and neurological derangement at one year of age;
In the diagnosis of postoperative infection in newborns, IL-8 decreases most rapidly after surgery and raises again as a sign of infection, PCT in the first days of life is very variable
Significance for the country
Three publications in medical journals indexed by SCI represent promotion of Slovenian medical science, two papers have been submitted to journals with SCI;
One doctors thesis has been defended in 2012; the second is in the phase of presentation of results. The two new doctors of science will contribute to the medical research community.
We expect that a more reliable diagnosis of severe infection in children with different diseases will contribute to a more rational use of antibiotics which will be not only economical but will also prevent development of resistant bacterial strains.
