Abstract
On the basis of digital data on relief, rock, and vegetation, the most significant elements of the internal structure of Slovene landscapes and at the same time of their external appearance, the geographic information system and verification in the field will be employed to elaborate a natural landscape typification of Slovenia. The most important natural landscape types in Slovenia will be defined, analyzed, and evaluated as relatively homogenous natural spatial units that similarly influence the social elements of the landscape and respond in a similar way to spatial development by society and require similar protection. Thematic maps of the natural landscape typification of Slovenia will be elaborated as a resource for research in the framework of numerous scientific branches, in the regionalization of Slovenia, in spatial planning, in the protection of Slovenia’s natural heritage, in regional planning, and in the preservation of the diversity of Slovenia’s landscapes.
Significance for science
The project has: - improved and expanded the methodology of natural landscape typification of Slovenia, - improveed knowledge of the laws of reciprocal influence among natural elements of the landscape, - stimulated scientific discussion on geographical regionalization, typification, and other divisions of Slovenia, particularly about the methodology, terminology, and concrete results in this field, - improved knowledge of the landscape diversity of Slovenia as one of its greatest natural assets, - increased the importance of geography as an applied discipline, - strengthened physical an regional geography, as well as landscape ecology, - introduced new methodological solutions and models into geography, - examined innovative use of geographic information systems, - increased the effectiveness and applicability of geographic information systems, - evaluated and supervised the quality of relief, litoligical and vegetation data in Slovenia, - strengthened the importance of fieldwork as a key element in testing the results of quantitative analyses, - contributed to better presentation of geographical characteristics of Slovenia in foreign countries, - provided applicable results such as thematic maps that become a scientific resource for new research in this field. The results of the project are important for geography and its related sciences in the pure and applied fields as well as for agriculture, regional planning, the preservation of the countryside and settling, planning proper land use, landscape ecology, and the preservation of Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage.
Significance for the country
The findings of the project are applicable in a number of fields in Slovenia, including: - in the formation of national measures for more suitable management in individual natural landscape types, - in harmonizing further economic and other development relative to environment limitations and economic needs in individual natural landscape types, - in various interventions by the competent institutions into environment, - in developing national and municipal measures for planning further spatial development, - in drawing up standard and detailed municipal spatial plans, - in the protection of Slovenia’s natural heritage, - in preparing geographical and other school textbooks for different level of education, - in changing the value perception of people regarding the natural landscape diversity of Slovenia as a national asset. Other scientific branches are able to make good use of the results of the project in their own research work, as state and private institutions and administrative authorities on the national and local level as a reference for their appropriate planning of the most varied developments and various organizations in their promotion of Slovenia as a country with great natural landscape diversity. The results are based on the geographic information system, which enable their constant upgrading and expansion. The findings of the project are and will be published in a form accessible to the widest circle of users.
