Significance for science
In view of the importance of the research project for the development of science, it could be said that this is one of the first attempts to provide synthetic and methodologically credible insights into the innovative and cognitive capabilities of EU members. This is especially true for new EU members that lag behind in this respect, since it is very important for them to know what are hampering and enabling factors when it comes to developing viable innovation and learning systems.
Significance for the country
The research project expands the knowledge base for successful innovation policies in Slovenia in several ways. The combination of several methodologies which are usually never combined will shed new light on the possibilities and limitations of national and EU policies in different national conditions. The focus on cognitive mobilisation develops the understanding of the forces driving national innovative capacity. Last but not least, the socio-cultural (including social capital) approach provides new insights into the role of social relations concerning rapid and reliable knowledge transfers and the transformation of knowledge from various sources to new knowledge and innovations.
