Significance for science
Development and optimization of the terahertz imaging and spectroscopy system represents an original contribution to science. The system was tested with samples of building materials and simulants of explosives and narcotics. The measurement of simulants of explosives and narcotics hidden behind different layers of paper and textiles demonstrated that the spectral identification is possible even in case of obstruction of the observed substance. Data fusion with other sensors was also tested. In cooperation with IMFM, the NQR measurements of piroxicam were completed, and in cooperation with the group of Prof. Valušis from Lithuania infrared spectroscopy measurements were carried out. On the basis of these contributions to science, the doctoral dissertation of the participating doctoral student UroŠ Puc is in the final stage of preparation. These results were published in articles in journals with impact factor, of which one journal listed in A" group. Another articel has been accepted for publication in Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and furhter two manuscripts have been submitted for publication in journals with impact factor: "Qualitative and quantitative analysis of calcium-based microfillers using terahertz spectroscopy and imaging" was submitted to Talanta, "Terahertz spectroscopic identification of explosive and drug simulants concealed by various hiding techniques" was submitted to Applied Optics. Another manuscript entitled "Spectroscopic Analysis of Hormone-Based Pharmaceuticals in Terahertz Frequency Range" was prepared for publication in Journal of Applied Physics.
Significance for the country
The project has strengthened international research cooperation, especially with a group of prof. Valušis from Vilnius, as well as in the framework of the NATO SET-193 from the field of Terahertz technology, which actively involved doctoral student Uros Puc. The project has also contributed to the pedagogical work, especially in the context of doctoral studies of Uros Puc, who already has the approved topic of the dissertation and is in the final stages of preparation of the dissertation. Also Prof. Zidanšek includes the results of the project in his pedagogical work for students at all three levels of study. Developed terahertz imaging methods are potentially useful for applications in the field of detecting concealed explosives and narcotics and analysis in the field of building and construction materials, which could also contribute to the economic development.
