Abstract
Poisoning of honeybees during blooming of canola in Pomurje in 2011 opened again many professional and political questions about safe use of pesticides in agriculture. Some results on samples of bees, bee products and plants directed to the further investigation of synergistic effects of different chemicals that bees can obtain during foraging as well due to beekeeping practice. Potential exposure to several chemicals inside the hive has been recognized as a serious threat for survival of honeybee colony. We are going to investigate all available scientific reports, secondary scientific sources and especially patents that are directed toward synergistic use of different chemicals in pesticides preparation. We are going to evaluate all available information regarding action of active compounds as well all published results regarding tested interactions of different compounds as well proposed potential synergistic activity for the insects declared in patents. Along with the wide data bases we are going to prepare schemes at the level of organism, cell and sub cellular level to indicate potential and known synergistic pathways in the honeybee. We are going to use statistical methods to perform evaluated meta analysis of available research. We are expecting to pinpoint most important synergistic pathways for honeybees according to the real use of pesticides. Based on available knowledge we will propose most important research for the future to clear out detected and potential threats for synergistic activity of pesticides.
Significance for science
Project connected several labs in joint analysis of knowledge in the field of synergistic effects of chemical on honey bees. Joint work also generated synergistic effects in our way of work and scientific view of the topic. We achieved new facts and views of research problem due to different foundations in knowledge. Value of obtained results is in generation of new research in a way to further better explain synergistic effects, especially to deliver direct evidences for mechanisms of action.. This type of research is trying to explain honeybee lose, but on the other hand investigated mechanisms are present in wider animal world even important for human health. Members of project team have been published several research reports connected with research topic of the project. They contributed new bids to the knowledge of honey bee losses as well to the mechanism of action of pesticides in general. We are planning additional joint scientific contributions based on the results of the project during current year.
Significance for the country
The main goal of the project was explanation of potential synergistic effects of chemical on honeybee and potential existence of such effects in our practice of use of chemicals in agriculture and beekeeping. There are several such potential effects. Due to findings we proposed 4 measures to reduce poisoning of honeybees. We posted proper foundations to establish adequate legislative measures for reduction of honeybee poisoning. The main message of our findings is that the State has to be more careful during registration of new pesticides in agriculture. The main problem is that when is a reasonable doubt for honeybee safety due to potential synergistic effect, such effect have to be tested in different conditions which mimics natural situation of honeybee colony. The second very importer message is that we need to established effective monitoring of environment with bees, which is also important for general monitoring as well for human health.
