Significance for science
1. Methodological improvement of the humanities and social sciences by focusing on various historical aspects of society with innovative quantitative methods 2. Producing new knowledge by developing new conceptual insights, questioning the methodologies of national histories, interpreting new sources etc. in a wide range of academic fields: women’s history, transnational history, the history of emotions, cultural, social and intellectual history, the history of migration, border studies etc. 3. International collaboration: sharing knowledge and comparing results across national borders. 4. Elucidating marginalized and absent aspects of history and analyzing institutional and structural conditions for their oblivion. 5. A contribution to a deeper knowledge of the processes in Slovenian history: To shed light on women in history means to bring new understanding of cultural, social as well as economic and political social change in 19th and 20th century on the Slovenian territory, both in everyday life and in social structures.
Significance for the country
1. Employment of younger colleagues who pursued education and research abroad reduces the “brain drain” while simultaneously bringing back knowledge obtained in other countries. Inclusion of early stage researchers importantly adds to the value of the project and is our way of trying to provide a counterbalance to concealed but systematic discrimination of young doctors of science. 2. The very nature of work in the sphere of historical research, which is dictated by proposals for projects of limited duration, has an especially discriminatory effect on young women in fertile age who are temporarily absent from work on maternity leave or due to childcare needs. The inclusion of younger female researchers in the project group therefore has an indirect impact for society in terms of establishing equal opportunities in science and higher education. 3. Through a deeper understanding of our historical roots we could efficiently contextualize the main challenges facing Europe today and develop attitudes which are essential for democratic and pluralist societies, such as empathy, civil courage, tolerance and open-mindedness. 4. Promoting gender equality by highlighting women’s involvement in the arts and sciences; contextualizing women’s biographies in time and space.
