Abstract
The present study deals with possible ways of improving the respiratory functions in patients with weakened respiratory muscles. Our foremost interest lies with how to improve coughing by using functional electrical stimulation (FES), at which point of the respiratory cycle stimulation is to be applied and in what way. Effects of FES upon coughing are to be compared with those obtained by other mechanical methods. Besides that we wish to find out whether changed FES control may exert an influence upon the respiratory muscles in the sense of an improved function, thereby ensuring better ventilation.
