Abstract
The research program encompasses research in the history art of the Slovenian territory as well as of the neighbouring regions of Central Europe and the Adriatic, covering in particular the fields of architecture, sculpture and painting, but also including urban planning, applied arts and design, from the Middle Ages to the Modern Period and contemporary art. The emphasis lies on the cataloguing and researching into several well defined stylistic periods, territories, themes and artists, and particularly the desiderata of art historical research; methodologically, the research follows the contemporary international practices (stylistic and functional analysis, typology, iconography, iconology and contextual issues, patronage studies, social art history). The points of departure are historical aspects with the investigation of archival materials and other written records, whereas for more recent periods the aspects of art criticism and theory are also taken into consideration, as well as history of art history. Important features here are the thematic and stylistic comparisons in broader European area, as well as the discussions of the research results within the international context.
Significance for science
In all its methodological aspects, the research program is comparable to similar art historical research carried out elsewhere in the world at university institutes and research organizations (e. g. in Austria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, etc.). Such research work not only contributes to the European and world history of culture and thought but also to a better understanding of the latest developments in art. The significance of the research program is in the exploration, presentation and contextualisation of relevant materials from the present territory of Slovenia and the neighbouring regions of Central Europe and the Adriatic into a wider field of European art history, as well as in evolving methodologies deriving from the specific historical and cultural circumstances of this area. The planned research will represent an important contribution to the understanding of the history of art in Slovenia, Central Europe and the Adriatic, particularly in the light of the connections between these regions since the Middle Ages. Individual methodological approaches, particularly cooperation with scientific laboratories in the form of the analyses of mural paintings of the late Middle Ages, as well as the research of construction practices based on archival sources represent a relative novelty in the framework of art historical research in Slovenia and elsewhere and are important for the further development of science on the European level. In the research of architectural history, we wish to develop methodology with the help of biennial scientific symposia Architectural History. The connections between research and pedagogical practice facilitates a constant influence on the development of teaching staff and the directing of junior researchers to those areas that are particularly underresearched in art history.
Significance for the country
Art heritage that is the basic subject of the research programme, is part of the cultural heritage of Slovenia; it is therefore important for the corroboration of the cultural identity of our country. The inclusion of the nearby regions of Central Europe and the Adriatic enables a more objective assessment as well as adopting more elaborated and advanced research methods; these would be impossible to develop to such a degree if the research were limited to Slovenia alone. Research results of the programme team can be directly used in the protection of cultural heritage (valorisation of cultural heritage, team members working as external experts) and its promotion both in cultural tourism, as well as within the activities of individual cultural institutions, such as museums, galleries, and archives, in organisation of art exhibitions, ecc. International presentations of research achievements (in publications and at conferences) also serve for the promotion of cultural heritage. Direct connection with pedagogical work facilitates strong influence on the development and implementation of undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as on high school teaching of art history (esp. through professional training carried out by the team for high school teachers of art history and through the high school graduation national commitee). In addition it has great impact on the development of the art history via the education of new personnel.
