Abstract
Research program "Decision support systems in e-business" is aimed at a comprehensive of management of complex organizational systems, be it manufacturing, service, social, ecological or virtual. An organizational system is a social unit, where people are pursuing common goals. It is managed by feedback and anticipative information, provided by decision support systems as an essential part of an Information System (IS). Contemporary organizational systems - business, public administration, society and individuals - are supported by modern information and communication technologies (ICT) that enable collaboration and co-creation of all stakeholders inside and outside organization. Participation of individuals within organizations and between organizations, the interaction of end users in the process of co-creation and innovation, participation of citizens in decision-making at the level of countries, regions and local authorities, management of large systems such as health and education, call for new forms of business. Companies collect huge amounts of data in their IS for the purpose of decision-making. In addition to that they use external data, data from social networks and publicly available information. The changing social and economic environment requires an improved and new solutions and business models. It is true that more data are available at any time and everywhere, on the other hand, the diversity, variety, volume and latency pose an even greater challenge for managers. These challenges are addressed in the continuation of the research program. Program is based on the assumption that management of complex organizational systems can be improved by using system and simulation methodologies that support cause-and-effect analysis in a transparent and user-friendly way. The research program builds on past research results and focuses on the development of methodologies, tools and models of solving complex organizational problems using context - appropriate methodologies of soft systems methodology, system dynamics, simulation methods, artificial intelligence methods, multi-criteria decision making methods, group decision making, data mining, process management methods, and total quality management, as an essential part of IS. The purpose of the program is to develop and implement appropriate integrated systems for decision support in electronic business. This will contribute to more efficient operations, competitive advantage, innovation and sustainable development. Developed methodologies and solutions will support the management of a wide range of business processes. We plan to implement them in the areas of management of production processes, human resource management, total quality management in business and information systems, processes in the field of organic agriculture, healthcare processes and development of innovative business models.
Significance for science
Research program framework connects classic simulation models, based on difference equations, with qualitative methods and expert systems. It is aimed at e-business scenarios validation. This is a novelty in the field of business simulation and decision theory. Connection of these methods provides new insights in the relationship between heuristic and quantitative approach in business problems solving and decision processes. A method of multi-criteria selection scenario will be developed and tested on a simulation model on the principle of Pareto optimality. The proposed concept includes soft and hard methodologies in the creation and selection of a scenario.  The simulation system, designed with a visual interactive modelling, integrated with group support system, enables the research of strategies selection, and analysing the effects of learning in the group decision-making process, supported by a simulation model, as well as sensitivity, dependant on the group. This represents a new approach also in the world. Although classical optimization methods are very well developed, they are virtually useless in solving complex soft-structured problems. They are being avoided even by the academicians. For this reason the so called comprehensive (or holistic) methodologies for problem solving are being developed, which are in fact "world view"! However, the gap between practice and hard system methodology is still present. The proposed methodological approach aims to overcome this gap. We will develop a comprehensive methodology and modify existing concepts of optimization into one complete method useful in practice. Thus, for example we expect that the results of group learning groups using business simulation system with structured information to be extended to decision-making in an unstructured environment of Web 2.0 and thus contribute to understanding and development of an effective information system to support learning and decision-making. Comparison and evaluation of so far developed optimization algorithms will be conducted in the scope of research. By modification and combination of existing algorithms, opportunities for development of new and more efficient optimization methods, will be identified. Methodology, developed in the context of the proposed program, will contribute to the improvement of the following processes:  - Planning and decision-making in business systems,  - Development of strategies of sustainable development,  - Production optimization.  It is expected that the software, developed in the scope of the research program, will be utilized by partnering organizations, as well as state administration, for management, control and process reengineering. International cooperation in the research program is also envisaged.
Significance for the country
Program is based on the assumption that by developing a user-friendly applications (web and mobile), based on simulation methodologies, it is possible to improve management of complex organizational and social systems. Current areas of application are: sustainable development, ecology, human resource management, production management, health information systems in conjunction with the structures of e-solutions. Living Labs are speeding up the process of innovation and a culture of social cooperation in problems solving. Individual research findings from the previous period are useful for managing companies. We expect that some of the achievements can be even more beneficial to use in organizations to manage, control and redesign processes. Cooperation with industrial partners and state administration in the previous research program promises further fruitful research. The developed methods and software solutions were successfully implemented in some domestic enterprises and organizations. Cooperation with the environment is also foreseen in the future, for example: Gorenje dd , Letrika dd, Elektro Gorenjska dd, DataLab d.o.o., Algit d.o.o., Arctur d.o.o., and state administration: Ministry of Health , Ministry of Defence. Furthermore, the program contributes to cooperation and transfer of knowledge in the local, regional and global level:  International Scientific Conference "Bled e-Conference" (since 1988) brings together leading global experts (researchers and industry) in the field of e-business; "International Conference on Organizational Science Development" in Portorož (since 1981).  Sections on "Simulation-Based Decision Support" within international scientific conferences "InterSymp”, “EURO-INFORS” and “QMOD 2013”.  ALADIN network: Inter-university cooperation in research and education in e-business (University of Graz, University of Maribor, University of Rijeka, University of Trieste, University of Novi Sad).  eLiving Lab (member of Eurpean Network of Living Labs since 2007). The research program will enable: integration of domestic economy focusing on SMEs in regional and global operations; improve processes of planning and decision-making;  assess implications of decision-making; reduce operating costs and increase quality; innovative products and services development; business models innovations; increase competitive advantage of enterprises; management of quality products and services; education and training of personnel; transfer new knowledge in curricula. The common ground of the research is in electronic data exchange, information systems and decision support methodology. Flow of ideas and experiences from different areas flow between group the members, thus contributing to the development of a soft systems methodology that is suitable for rational approaches in management. Research group is expected to have a positive impact on the design and development of new services, which will contribute to a more innovative society.
