Abstract
The project plans for the development of methods for modeling physical events and processes which couple several length and time scales, from nano to macro lengths and femtoseconds to time units measured in days. Modeling methods at lower scales are discrete and will include molecular dynamics with atoms and clusters of atoms as particles, as well as discrete particle mesoscale methods such as dissipative particle dynamics, smooth particle hydrodynamics and cellular automata. At higher scales, and at lower scales when appropriate, continuum discretization methods will be used, such as finite element method and meshless methods. Here, special attention will be devoted to methods of nonlinear vibrations. A particular challenge will be the development of methods for coupling models from several scales and also development of low scale coarse graining methods. This coupling will provide an overall insight into mutual conditioning and connection of biochemical and biomechanical events at levels of protein, cell and microenvironment with the behavior of biological organs and systems. It will be required to deal with large problems solution using parallel processing and clusters, and to handle enormous amount of data (data mining methods). The numerical methods will be accompanied by experimental research in labs in Serbia and abroad, e.g. at University of Texas Medical Center at Houston and Tufts University in Boston, where new experimental methods and procedures are planned.
