Abstract
The Koper urban landscape is typical of Slovene conditions from both natural and social-geographic indicators. Natural-geographic characteristics, and from them the self-cleaning ability of individual landscape components, require careful monitoring and sustainable spatial development. On the other hand, Man''s interventions to date into this landscape have not only re-modelled it but in parts also threatened its neutralising capability such that the problem of environmental pollution has arrived. In this it is necessary to emphasise the strong pressures from different spatial users on the narrow coastal belt that has in parts already exceeded its sustainability and, on the other hand, the disorganised sewage system and illegal waste dumps in the interior and Rizana''s water-protected belt. Results of the Study - a complex presentation of the quality of the environment and its individual components (air, water, earth) that could also represent a sample for future periodical reports on the status of the environment in the municipality, - an inventory of the important polluters with emissions in all three aggregate states, - a presentation of important ecological problems (noise, waste, etc.), - an attempt to shed light on health conditions in the municipality with respect to illnesses caused by environmental factors, - an assessment of the quality and quantity of the existing data base and proposals for its extension, - recommendations and priorities for environmental measures, - preparation of data on the state of the environment in a form suitable for supplementing the municipal institute of Geography. The study is not only intended for expert planning of future spatial and economic development but also more for the public ecological awareness. It is in exactly this area that, in the past, there was only a one-sided interpretation and inexpert exaggeration or covering up of certain ecological problems so that an integral and multi-faceted as well as professionally debated assessment of the situation has a very practical value.
