Abstract
The prognosis of breast cancer patients depends very much on the ability of tumor cells to invade the surrounding tissue and to metastasize. According to the data published so far tumor-associated proteases and their inhibitors play a major role in the above mentioned processes. The aim of our study is to determine the prognostic value o uPA-system proteins, cathepsins D and L and their various combinations for survival of breast cancer patients as well as to determine whether the expression of uPA-system proteins and cathepsins in primary tumor can predict for the effectiveness of adjuvant systemic treatment. We expect that the measurement of different proteases and their inhibitors in primary tumor would allow for a better selection of patients which could benefit from therapy. In addition, on the basis of confirmed predictive value of different proteases and their inhibitors for response to adjuvant therapy a better selection of treatment for each individual patient would be possible leading to a better effectiveness of therapy and improved survival of patients.
