Abstract
In globalized world, special character of place, which differs it from others places and makes it recognizable, is increasingly valued and desired quality. Proposed research addresses question of architecturally conditioned spatial identities. In methodological sense, it initially takes stand on dilema whether trends of unification of image of settlements shall be addressed uniformly or shall certain differences between individual settlements be taken into account in terms of their management. Foreseen approach assumes that the regulation requires adaptation to settlement characteristics, so it is necessary to initially define groups of settlements that have similar characteristics. At the same time, it is necessary to define contents that are subject to regulation and differe regionally. Proposed research, which is aimed at defining quality criteria for planning / development of settlements, preserving regional and local identity and preventing further expansion of scattered construction, comprehensively reviews and valorizes definition of so called architectural landscapes and regions, development trends and level of preservation of Slovenia's architectural identity. The starting point is revision of existing research, including one of central works in this field by Fister et al (1993). This is followed by assessment of preservation and presence of traditional architectural typologies in contemporary space in comparison to new manifestations. In this process key generators of changes in architectural identities in recent decades are identified. With the recognition of contemporary trends in formation of architectural identity and on basis of existing classifications of architectural typologies, the revision of settlement and architectural typologies are proposed as well as their characteristics and their spatial distribution (revision of architectural regions or landscapes). The aim of these efforts is 1 to provide expert insights into the state of the art and to provide guidelines that will be the basis for overcoming today's spontaneous growth of settlements, which shall be replaced by well-thought development of new built structures within settlement-cores and with respect to the pre-existing built fabrics, and 2 to refresh and, if necessary, determine new standards of architectural design, which will take into account the requirements of modern life as well as ensure long-term preservation of architecturally conditioned distictivness of different parts of Slovenia. Such efforts must simultaneously address two basic spatial criteria, namely the criterion of settlement structure as a whole and the criterion of architecturally conditioned local identity defined by buildings locations in space and their basic spatial characteristics (eg volumes, roof design) and detailed design (eg facade design, architectural elements). Synchronous processing of new morphological patterns and new architectural typologies, and their comparison with traditional patterns and typologies is the basic analytical tool of the research. This is the main methodological contribution - through selected case studies in s.c. pilot architectural region the research examines the potential of the combined fieldwork collection and GIS-based collection of data for the purpose of assessing the preservation of architectural typologies by identifying the causal link of architecturally conditioned spatial identity based on morphological pattern analyzes (Method for determining architecturally conditioned spatial identity - MAPPI). The results of research work are thus the basis for development of mechanisms for strengthening architecturally conditioned spatial identities at a level of directing the development of settlements and individual buildings. The research plan envisages an expert discussion with wider circle of experts, and the publication of the main results in a format of a manual.
