Description
The Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia is the central national research institute for spatial planning, urban design and related disciplines. It was established 24th May 1955 by the Executive Council of the Assembly of Slovenia. Since 1962 the Institute is an independent research institution. Its activities include research and expert development work in the fields of urban and regional planning and related disciplines. In 1993 the Urban Planning Institute became a public research organisation, recognised and partly financially supported by the Slovene government. The basic objectives of the Urban Planning Institute as the central national research institute dealing with physical planning and spatial management are: - Advancement of theoretical research in planning and design - Development and evaluation of planning methods and techniques - Development and application of planning information systems - Development of new activities related to institution building support - Education and training of planning students and professionals - Implementation of applied research in design projects - Publishing, information exchange and documentation of planning literature - Transfer of knowledge through consultation activities The basic research field of the Urban planning institute is general development of methods of regional and urban research and the methods of researching instruments of physical and urban planning and design. We also believe, that it is extremely important for the quality of research to establish direct transfer of results into everyday life and to have an in-depth knowledge about physical circumstances – the basis for recognising new research challenges. In the frame of wider urban, regional and spatial planning the following specific fields can be listed: methodology of programming urban development; methodology of shaping urban form; urban geography and sociology, regional economics; applied demography with regard to town-planning forecasting; comprehensive traffic studies; planning of residential areas; planning of tourist regions; urban renewal, preservation and landscape design, etc. The Institute is involved in publishing and trains design and planning professionals. In this way it is able to offer the public an insight into the theoretical and practical findings of its research staff and also a connection between domestic and foreign research and practice in the fields of urban and regional planning and design. In the field of professional development, the Institute elaborates model plans, standards, norms and planning criteria; it maintains a data-bank, provides information and documentation services; works on terminology and maintains a rich planning library. In short the main research topics are: - Systematic monitoring of development of all spatial structures in the country, especially towns and other settlements, as well as documenting spatial development; - Development of methods of spatial planning, urban planning and urban design; - Publishing of manuals, the scientific journal Urbani izziv and other publications, with emphasis on method development, as well as critique of present conditions and development trends; - Participation in spatial planning on the national, regional and local level; - Conducting pilot urban projects and spatial plans for settlements and typical regions; - Participation in preparation of laws and by-laws in all fields of spatial management and environmental protection; - Participation in evaluation of natural and cultural heritage and respect for their inclusion in spatial planning acts and implementation; - Maintaining international links with consultancy, expert and review activities; - Participation in the teaching process and independent organisation of scientific conferences, expert workshops, as well as continuing and specialist courses; - Development of research equipment and other institutional research infr...
